As usual you may change only US dollars and German marks in exchange
offices and banks in Russia.
Short history of monetary system.
The first monetary reform after USSR-times was implemented in Russia
in July 1993. The Russian ruble (equal to Soviet ruble) was put into
circulation.
The second monetary reform in the current Russia was carried
out on January 1 - December 31, 1998. New ruble (equals to 1000
old rubles) and new kopejka (equals to 10 old rubles) were put into
circulation. The total denominational factor rus.ruble / sov.ruble
is 1 000.
There are now (October 2000) in circulation:
banknotes of the following denominations:
5 rubles (1997),
10 rubles (1997, 2001),
50 rubles (1997, 2001),
100 rubles (1997, 2001)
and 500 rubles (1997, 2001);
change coins of the denominations:
1 kopejka, 5, 10, 50 kopejek, 1 ruble, 2, 5 rubles;
a new banknote of 1000 rubles
plan to be put into circulation since January 1, 2001.
