Order of teams formation

The general rules for the teams formation are determined by #5. of the Acting Statutes/Regulations on the International Astronomy Olympiad.

Permissions for inclusion students in the teams
depending on citizenship, place of residence and study

For the most of the countries (except the countries, which have territories forming separate teams). Students:

  • citizens of the country;
  • permanent residents of the country;
  • who get basic full-time education in an educational institution of the country
may be team members of this country.

For the countries, which have territories forming separate teams. Students:

  • citizens of the country residing outside the territories forming separate teams;
  • permanent residents of the country (irrespective of citizenship), which live outside the territories forming separate teams;
  • who get basic full-time education in an educational institution of the country located outside the territories forming separate teams (irrespective of citizenship)
may be team members of this country.

For the territories forming separate teams. Students:

  • permanent residents of the territory (irrespective of citizenship);
  • who get basic full-time education in an educational institution of the territory (irrespective of citizenship);
  • previously long time permanent residents of the territory (irrespective of citizenship)
may be team members of this territory.

Participation of the separate team of a territory implies absence of students of this territory in the team of the parent country. The right to form the separate team of the territory is eliminated, even if one student of this territory is a member of the parent country team. The right to form the separate team of the territory is eliminated, even if one student outside of this territory is applied as a member of the territory team.

Territories that may get the right to form separate teams at IAO are:

Territories that may get the right to form separate teams at APAO are:

  • Baikal territory or Siberia as the founder-host of APAO;
  • Special autonomous territorial-administrative regions - territories with international relations;
  • The city or province that organizes the Asian-Pacific Astronomy Olympiad of the current year;
  • The city or province that organizes the International Astronomy Olympiad of the current year;
  • Territories organizing their own Olympiads due to the fact that students (or at least the majority of students) of these territories cannot participate in the National Olympiads (and, therefore, cannot be included in the National teams) for administrative, religious, military and other reasons.

Inviting and admitting a territory team to participate in an IAO or APAO is carried out solely for the purpose of ensuring students can participate in the Olympiads and does not have any political connotation (for example, does not mean recognition of the territory as an independent state or, on the contrary, recognition it as part of any state).

In order to eliminate political moments in the name of a territorial team, only proper names (like Crimea, Baikal, Spitsbergen) and geographical terms (island, peninsula, territory), but not political or administrative (like kingdom, republic, province, district, free city and etc.).
